Teaching parents, teaching kids

The mission of Parent Power is to increase the literacy skills of both children and parents so they can achieve greater success in school and the workplace.

Working in partnership with Literacy Action over eight weeks, we teach parents specific skills and strategies for helping their children with homework and reading.

Parent Power strategies

  • Parents embrace their role as the adult who is responsible for ensuring their child does their homework and reads for pleasure daily to build foundational reading skills

  • Parents know how to help their children get their homework done and how to support their reading improvement

  • Parents recognize they can support their child's education each day

  • Children of participants improve reading skills

Details

Volunteers offer dinner for children and adults before each session. While parents attend the Parent Power program, their children read or work on homework with volunteers.

Parent Power meets at local schools, including the Barack and Michelle Obama Academy (formerly D. H. Stanton Elementary School) and the Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School for eight sessions in the fall and spring.
